Este coche fue el más destacado tanto de la serie del R5, como de la época en la que convivió. poseía un motor atmosferico que desarrollaba 110 CV a las 6.000 rpm, con un peso de sólo 830 kgs. Nació en 1977 y fue desarrollado por Renault Sport en colaboración con su división Alpine. Su intención era crear un vehículo de competición que pudiera usarse para la calle. Se desarrolló por lados diferentes el motor y el chasis. En un principio, el prototipo del Alpine estaba provisto de alerón, pero tras los tests los ingenieros decidieron retirárselo ya que eso restaba su velocidad.
